Leadership Is a Dance
The locker room was still.
Not silent, but still.
Steam rose from shoulders. Boots scraped against concrete. The scoreboard outside didn’t look good, and all eyes were on the captain.
This was supposed to be his moment to speak.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he looked at a 20-year-old winger. New to the squad. The youngest player in the room. Raw, but razor sharp.
In that moment, I saw something: Fire. Conviction. Clarity.
He stood up. And the room leaned in.
That day, I learned a truth most leadership books don’t teach:
Leadership isn’t about always being out front. It’s about knowing where you’re needed and having the humility to move.
The Fixed Leader Is a Fragile One
We tend to idolize one type of leader: the trailblazer out front, sword raised, never flinching.
But in sport, business, and life, that’s only part of the story.
The best leaders are the ones who move. They adapt. They read the moment.
Sometimes they lead from the front.
Sometimes from the side.
And sometimes, they have the wisdom to lead from behind.
Let’s explore the three stances that define adaptive leadership and why knowing when to shift might be your greatest competitive edge.
🧭 The Visionary Leader — Leading from the Front
This is the stance we most associate with classic leadership: setting the tone, casting the vision, going first when the terrain is uncertain.
You step forward when the team is stuck. When doubt creeps in. When clarity is needed.
You move first. You speak clearly. And your courage builds trust.
In business, this might look like launching a bold initiative when the market is unclear.
In rugby, it’s taking the first hit-up after conceding two early tries.
But here’s the catch: if you stay in this position too long, your team stops thinking for themselves.
They wait for your cue instead of trusting their own.
🤝 The Coaching Leader — Leading from the Side
This is shoulder-to-shoulder leadership. You’re close enough to offer feedback, but far enough to let others find their rhythm.
You ask more than you tell. You guide more than you direct. You lead from the side when trust is strong and your people are growing through repetition and reflection.
In business, this looks like mentoring a new leader, co-authoring strategy, or reviewing a pitch deck without taking over.
On the rugby pitch, it’s lining up with a young forward pack. Not barking orders, but showing up beside them in the ruck.
This is where real development happens.
🪶 The Servant Leader — Leading from the Back
This one takes the most trust, and the most ego control.
You step back. Not because you’re passive, but because you believe in your team’s ability to own the mission.
You support. You encourage. You watch quietly as others rise.
In business, it might be letting a junior lead a client meeting while you remain quietly present.
In rugby, it’s handing the halftime talk to a player, and meaning it.
When done right, leading from the back is the most powerful vote of confidence you can give.
Because when they win, they know they did it.
And they’ll run through walls for you next time.
The Art Is in the Movement
Rigid leadership is a fast track to burnout—for you and your team.
But when you learn to move with awareness, humility, and trust, everything shifts.
Lead from the front when direction is needed.
Lead from the side when growth is underway.
Lead from the back when belief has taken root.
Resilient leaders don’t cling to one position.
They sense the moment and respond accordingly.
Final Whistle
There is no perfect stance. Only the right one for the moment.
Do you have the self-awareness to know where your team needs you most?
And the courage to move there?
Because leadership isn’t about being in control.
It’s about being in tune.
